Craig Sieben Named Finalist for Prestigious BOMA/Chicago Award

Craig Sieben, President of Sieben Energy Associates, was recently named a finalist for the 2017-18 Affiliate Member of the Year Award from BOMA/Chicago. The winner of this and other Gold Circle Awards will be announced on January 25, 2018 at BOMA/Chicago's annual TOBY/Gold Circle Awards Gala.

The Affiliate Member of the Year Award, according to BOMA/Chicago, is "Dedicated to honoring exceptional and significant service to BOMA/Chicago by an individual employed by an Affiliate member company and superior customer service and professional expertise provided to the building members of BOMA/Chicago." Sieben Energy Associates has been an Affiliate member company for many years.

Sieben Energy Associates Qualifies for Cutting-Edge NYSERDA Program

Following a rigorous application and review process, Sieben Energy Associates (SEA) has qualified as a System and Service Provider for the Commercial Real Time Energy Management (RTEM) Program from New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA).

SEA is the only Chicago-based or Illinois-based firm listed as a System and Service Provider on the Qualified Vendor page on NYSERDA's website. Through its involvement in the monitoring-based commissioning (MBCx) program in the Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) service territory of northern Illinois, SEA has significant experience designing and delivering RTEM-type projects. ComEd's MBCx program is described on the utility's retro-commissioning page.

Sieben Energy Associates Joins Smart Energy Analytics Campaign

Sieben Energy Associates (SEA) has joined the Smart Energy Analytics Campaign, a program led by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Better Buildings Alliance and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. This campaign "encourages the use of a wide variety of commercially available Energy Management and Information Systems (EMIS) technologies and ongoing monitoring practices to help uncover energy-saving opportunities and improve building performance for the long run."

EMIS technologies are underutilized and, frankly, undervalued in today's marketplace. Through the Smart Energy Analytics Campaign, the key organizers hope to spur the adoption of EMIS in the commercial building sector for energy management processes such as monitoring-based commissioning.

What Makes a Successful Retro-Commissioning Project?

We will host a brown bag lunch seminar entitled "What Makes a Successful Retro-Commissioning Project" later this month. The seminar will commence at 12 noon on Wednesday, February 15, in the Harris Bank Building, 115 South LaSalle Street, Chicago. Sieben Energy Associates has to date performed over 80 retro-commissioning projects, comprising over 55 million square feet of building space.

During this seminar, we will draw upon our leadership and expertise in retro-commissioning to advise members of the Building Owners and Managers Association of Chicago (BOMA Chicago) on the project attributes that lead to a positive outcome. This event is listed on the BOMA Chicago website.

The Value of Long-Term Energy Planning

Jerry Burin, vice president and partner at Sieben Energy Associates, recently authored an article on the value of long-term energy planning. ‚ÄčIn his article, Jerry provides sound rationale for "the orderly execution of an energy plan aligning with the organization's other long-term planning objectives."

Rather than approaching energy management as a series of ad hoc tactical initiatives, adopting a strategic approach can achieve greater success and a stronger return on investment. The article was published in the January 2017 issue of Building Operating Management magazine and appears in three parts online.
